Inspiration: Bob Melrose had some inspirational quotes from the great philosopher, WT Pooh (as in Winnie The) about paying attention to the present.
IDEA quote: "Diversity is the one true thing we have in common. Celebrate it every day. “ - Unknown Upcoming Programs: Please see the side panel for upcoming speakers and be sure to invite your friends!
Rotary Cares: If you are aware of a fellow Rotarian who is going through a challenging time (i.e. personal or family health, family death, etc.) please let Sara Murphy know so we can let them know we are thinking of them and provide whatever support we can. Sara.jane.murphy1@gmail.com
Guests: • CJ Martindale – guest of Diane Knight, previous Rotary Club member • Sarah Arnold – speaker – Education Manager of Dementia Together
Program: • Mission of Dementia Together (DT): Through education and enrichment, we make living well with dementia the expectation, not the exception • Hope is a third pillar and d comes from connections, friendships, awareness, purpose and empowerment • “No one has to walk the dementia journey alone.” DT is there 100% for the caregivers who care for those they love with dementia • Cyndy Luzinski learned the SPECAL method in England, brought it here and founded DT in 2015. • There are some reversible causes for dementia symptoms – depression, certain vitamin deficiencies like B12 and others • Only 60-70% of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s; other causes are vascular, dementia, Lewy Body and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) • Sarah demonstrated how people store their memories in “albums” that have both facts and feelings; over time there is an inability to store facts reliably, but the feelings remain. • Common sense communication relies on logic and reason • SPECAL sense communication depends on three Golden Rules: 1) Don't ask direct questions; 2) Listen to the Expert; 3) Don't contradict the person
• Sarah encouraged all of us to learn more by taking a one-hour SPECAL class - dementiatogether.org.
