Goal was $50,000 (gross). In spite of the weather that dampened our crowd totals, Dave reported that we made $49, 723. That was before Keith White raised his hand and said he would make up the difference - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Diane recognized our three top fundraisers - Dave Marvin (9 companies for $5,750), Lynn Matson (9 companies for $4,750) and Debra Kelly (8 companies for $4,500). Even though Deb resigned from the club a few months agodue to other commitments, she continued to work with us to bring Community Supporters on board. We thanked her with a Paul Harris +1 pin.
Update on Jasi - our Charlie Peterson scholarship recipient graduated last May with her degree in psychology. She has been a para professional at Polaris as an integrative service specialist; she is applying for a MS in Social Work. Susan Peterson has been her mentor.
International Serice Committee: Bob Waltermire - Our International Service committee has been busy this year, granting out $34,000, which is only 5% of the costs of all 14 projects they have done. The remainder comes from other clubs, the district and the Rotary Foundation.
The 14 projects are in 11 countries across 4 continents and will benefit (conservatively) 126,000 people; Our impact will be felt in El Salvor, Guatemala, India, Cambodia, Ukraine, the Republic of Gambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Additionally, a deforestation project in Brazil is our club's first in the new seventh Area of Focus - the Environment.
Marcy Woodland is working on a new $42,000 global grant for a program called From Heart to Heart, which will provide surgery for 30 children who were born with congenital heart defects in Vietnam. Our partner is the Rotary club of Saigon International. There are approximately 16,000 children born annually with congenital heart disease, thought to be linked to the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam war. “Empowering families, providing hope.”
Walt Grady presented a project that will bring latrines to the area of Siem Reap, Cambodia, where 20,000 families don't have a latrine. These latrines will significantly improve health and the environment. Our partner is The Trailblazer Foundation, founded by Chris Coats, whose goal is to install 100 latrines a year.
Another project is bringing 1175 stoves which were developed at CSU to 10 villages in Pune, India. These are faster; cause 80% less pollution; save trees; and will benefit 6,000 people. This project was selected by our new members.
Ice Breaker Activity - lots of laughter ensued at tables when we were challenged to share a bucket list item, our worst job or our best musical experience stories! It was quick and fun. Thanks to the IDEA committee for continuing to think of ways we can make sure our club environment is as welcoming as possible.
From hearing from our scholarship recipients to hearing how our work from our Rotary grants this year will impact 126,000 people around the world, it truly illustrates how important our fundraising efforts are!
